Released Audio Tape day before 9/11, Clinton: I ‘could have killed’ Osama bin Laden, but didn’t

Today, the Associated Press released a newly discovered audio tape, recorded on September 10, 2001.

In the recording, former President Bill Clinton is speaking to an audience in Australia about his administration’s effort to combat Osama bin Laden.

In the speech, President Clinton joked, “I nearly got him once,” as the room filled with laughter, before continuing, “I could have killed him, but I would have had to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan and killed 300 innocent women and children.”

The speech took place at a speaking engagement in Melbourne, Australia, as the former president was addressing members of that nation’s Liberal Party.

Michael Kroger, the man who made the audio recording, said that in the wake of the 9/11 attacks he had forgotten all about the recording until recently.

Critics of the forty-second President were quick to blast him for not killing Osama bin Laden when he had the chance; however, others defend Clinton, saying that at the time, he could have never realized the magnitude of bin Laden’s influence or plan.

What do you think? Should President Clinton have killed Osama bin Laden when he had the chance?
