Today, the Wisconsin Badgers did Bama a favor, making the Crimson Tide the sole unbeaten team in the nation.
The Badgers defeated the Western Michigan Broncos by a score of 24-16 in the 2017 edition of the Cotton Bowl., in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the score made the contest seem: Thanks to some very questionable calls late in the fourth quarter.
Wisconsin got off to a quick lead and never looked back and despite the final score only showing the Big Ten-West champions winning by eight points, the game was hardly a close contest; a handful of questionable calls late in the fourth quarter helped Western Michigan score a late-game touchdown, but the Broncos missed the PAT.
Previously, the MAC champion Broncos had boasted of a 13-0 season that included a couple one-possession wins against Northwestern and Ohio.
Though their 13-0 season in MAC was impressive, the selection committee [rightly so] did not believe that wins North Carolina Central, Georgia Southern, Buffalo, Toldeo, Akron and Kent State were impressive enough to grant the fans’ with #WeWantBama signs their wish… and after Monday’s Cotton Bowl, Broncos fans should probably be writing their thank you notes to the committee.
The Badgers extend their overall record to 11-3 for the 2016/17 season.
Now, only Bama remains in the column of unbeatens, with a perfect 13-0 record, including a win in the SEC championship game as well as a 24-7 win over #4 Washington in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl.
The Crimson Tide will face #2 Clemson on Monday, January 9, 2017, in a contest that will decide the 2016 National Champions; however, the Tide will do so without celebrated offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, who will not be coaching Alabama in the championship. Kiffin has accepted the head coaching job at Florida Atlantic University and Saban announced that Kiffin’s successor, Steve Sarkisian, will be taking over those duties next Monday.
