In 2013, the Ford Motor Company published a study that highlighted anticipated trends in the near future and at the heart of this analysis was the word “Trust”… or lack thereof.
The first sentence of the report stated, “If trust were bottled as wine, the vintages of recent years would be bitter and scarce.”
Referencing a series of scandals that have hit all aspects of western culture: political, scientific, religious and even in people’s personal lives, the 74-page report concluded that the general public has been made “weary of misinformation”, leading people to reappraise almost everything they’ve previously accepted as fact.
Interestingly, thanks to social media and the ease with which individuals with non-mainstream ideas can now locate each other, Western Culture is seeing something truly remarkable: a growing and significant number of people who believe the earth is flat… or who are at the very minimum, open to the idea that NASA has been perpetrating a massive hoax upon the world’s population for more than half a century.
History of Flat Earth:
Though as a young child you were probably taught that the scholars back in Columbus’ day all believed the earth was flat, the reality is this: Your teachers were wrong.
From at least the 1300s, onward, belief in a flat Earth among the educated was almost nonexistent. According to Stephen Jay Gould, “there never was a period of ‘flat Earth darkness’ among scholars… Greek knowledge of sphericity never faded, and all major medieval scholars accepted the Earth’s roundness as an established fact of cosmology.”
Historian Jeffrey Burton claims “with extraordinary few exceptions no educated person in the history of Western Civilization from the third century B.C. onward believed that the Earth was flat”, and ascribes popularization of the flat-Earth myth to histories by John William Draper, Andrew Dickson White, and Washington Irving.
Modern Flat Earth Movement:
There is limited debate among scholars as to whether the Bible teaches that the earth is flat or a sphere.
Historically, the overwhelming consensus among Christian leaders has been that the Word of God teaches that the planet is a sphere, referencing among other verses, Job 26.7:
“He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.”
In the early-1800s, however, Samuel Birley Rowbotham, an English inventor, inerpreted Scriptural passages to mean that the earth was flat and soon formed and organization known as Zetetic Astronomy.
The group held that the earth is a flat disk centered at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice, with the sun, moon, planets, and stars only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth. After Rowbotham’s death in 1884, followers of his Zetetic Astronomy founded the Universal Zetetic Society. The group would eventually become known as “The Flat Earth Society” and boasted of a membership of more than 3,000 individuals by the end of the 1980s.
In the mid-1990s, the organization became inactive and nearly became defunct, but in 2009, the Society officially reopened to new members and has since grown its social media presence to nearly 50,000 followers.
Though their teachings are far from mainstream, they have managed to successfully convince at least one celebrity that everything they ever knew was a lie: Rapper B.O.B. has become an outspoken leader in the flat earth movement.

What Modern-Flat Earthers Believe:
The general consensus among modern-day flat earthers is that the planet is a flat disk, with the North Pole being at the center, and a wall of ice (Antarctica) serving as the earth’s perimeter.
The sun is believed to circle the earth, shining like a flashlight in a circular fashion – “this is why it is daylight here and dark there.”
The circular disk also explains why ships are able to circumnavigate the globe.
The sun, moon and stars are considerably closer to the earth than we have been led to believe and the giant, spherical earth pictures we have seen nearly our entire lives are nothing more than doctored images from a governmental organization tasked with keeping a lie, i.e. NASA.
Interest in a Flat Earth is Growing… Worldwide:
Though all of this talk may sound crazy to you, hard data from Google reveals that there is a growing interest, worldwide, as to whether there’s something to this notion of the world being flat and our entire lives being a lie.
According to Google Trends, interest in “Flat Earth” in January 2017 is nearly 6-fold what it was in June 2004 for residents of the United States. Worldwide, has seen “flat earth” searches grow by 2.74 times, with even greater percentages in Indonesia, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.
Perhaps even more surprising are the places inside the United States where there is a growing interest in searching for “flat earth”: Minnesota tops Google’s list… which maybe shouldn’t be that surprising, considering the fact that these are the same people who made Jesse Ventura governor!
Regardless of what your beliefs are regarding a flat earth, you can’t help but recognize that it’s pretty remarkable that there is a 600% increase in Google searches for “Flat Earth” than there was 12 years ago.
