Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (R) is taking on members of his own party in a growing rift between conservative Republicans GOP leaders in the House, who fear that despite the tough talk from the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, when push comes to shove, the GOP majority will opt for what he calls “Obamacare Lite”.
Monday night, Senator Paul was joined by Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) in taking a firm, public stand to declare they would accept nothing less than full repeal of Obamacare.
In a series of coordinated tweets, the senators put those who would push “Obamacare Lite” on notice that they will not vote for any such plans:
2 yrs ago, the GOP Congress voted to repeal Obamacare. That 2015 repeal language should be the floor, the bare minimum. #FullRepeal

“Congress must keep its word. We were elected to fully repeal and replace Obamacare, and that’s the only thing I will vote for,” said Sen. Paul. “The legislation brought to the Senate floor must at least match the standard set by the 2015 repeal bill that both chambers of Congress passed.”
On Thursday, Senator Paul escalated the showdown with his own party, by announcing to the media, “I have been told that the House Obamacare bill is under lock & key, in a secure location, and not available for me or the public to view.”
Two hours later, he took to Twitter to state, “I am heading to the secure location where they are keeping the House obamacare bill. I will demand a copy for the American people.”
With a portable copying machine in tow, the Kentucky Senator marched over to the House of Representatives side of the Capitol Building to the doorway of the “secret office for the secret bill.”
The room was guarded by a Capitol Police officer and Paul was not authorized to go inside.
In a true tale of “politics makes strange bedfellows”, the conservative Kentucky senator’s actions found a friend in liberal California representative Nancy Pelosi. Not long after Paul’s trip to the House, Pelosi tweeted a picture of bloodhounds, with the caption: “Just helping out @RandPaul. #ReleaseTheHounds #WheresTheBill”
