Have you ever saw the politicians on your television and thought, “If I had their jobs, I’d do things so much better”? If so, here’s your chance to prove yourself!
This morning, the State of West Virginia issued an email announcing, “A wide range of statewide organizations are coming together this spring and summer to host five day-long, non-partisan candidate trainings – targeted at everyday citizens who want to run for office. Trainings will take place in Morgantown, Charleston, Beckley, Logan, and Martinsburg.”
Registration is now open at www.ocofwv.org/candidatetraining. The price is $50 for candidates, with a special $20 rate for students and campaign managers. Limited scholarships are also available. Organizers say that the training is designed for folks ready to run now, or who might consider a run in the future.
“If you have ever thought of throwing your hat in the ring, this is the training for you,” said Stephen Smith of WV Healthy Kids and Families Coalition.
The day-long training will include interactive sessions on Stump Speech and Communications, Asking for Money, and Getting Ready to Run – where folks will learn about the first steps they will need to take to decide what to run for, and how. There will also be a wide range of guest speakers – including representatives from local civics organizations, media professionals, and elected officials.
“If we want our government to be more representative and more responsive, it means that we have to get more people to take the courageous step of running for office,” added Stacy North, chair of the WV Women’s Commission.
Non-gender discriminatory training sessions are scheduled for the following locations (Each training is identical in content):
• May 16th in Charleston
• July 15th in Logan
• August 5th in Martinsburg
Two additional training sessions have also been scheduled exclusively for women:
• April 29th in Morgantown (Ready to Run – By and For Women)
• June 10th in Beckley (Ready to Run – By and For Women)
