Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Pike County

The National Weather Service in Jackson, Kentucky, has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for central Pike County in eastern Kentucky.

According to the special weather bulletin, at 5:17 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Meta, or 9 miles northeast of Pikeville, moving southeast at 35 mph.

The storm was producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

“Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include: Huddy, Meta, Mcandrews, Jamboree, Belfry, Argo, Heisey, Hardy, Sidney, Phyllis, Phelps, Fedscreek, Canada, Toonerville, Varney, Majestic, Kimper, Paw Paw, Coleman and Board Tree.

“For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building,” stated the Weather Service, adding, “Large hail and damaging winds and continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature`s leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
