This past week, the US territory of Puerto Rico overwhelmingly voted to become a US State – it is important to note that only 23% of eligible citizens voted.
Though the path to statehood will be a complicated and uneasy journey, literally requiring “an act of Congress”, one of the greatest hurdles has just been crossed: the support of the islands inhabitants.
With this being said, the reality is that one of the most visible changes Puerto Rican statehood would produce would be changing the American flag, which has thirteen stripes for the original 13 states and the number of stars equal to the number of states… The only problem is that 51 is a difficult number to evenly divide, meaning that any stars arrangement on the flag would take some creativity.
