After multiple reports of an ongoing active shooter situation Redstone Arsenal in Alabama released the following statement shortly after 2 p.m Tuesday:
“This morning, a potential active shooter incident occurred at Redstone Arsenal, in the Sparkman Center. The installation was in lock-down mode with all gates closed, and employees sheltered in place at their respective buildings.
“As of 12:30 p.m., employees can move about the post in an orderly fashion, but are asked to keep movements limited, as needed.
“Movement remains restricted in the area near the intersections and roads around the Sparkman Center.
“The gates to the Arsenal are open and operational.
“This incident is under investigation. The safety and security of our workforce remains our top priority.”
Redstone Arsenal is a United States Army post adjacent to Huntsville in Madison County, Alabama.
The Arsenal is a garrison for a number of tenants including the United States Army Materiel Command, Army’s Aviation and Missile Command, the Missile Defense Agency of the Department of Defense, and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Many of these units are moving due to decisions by the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
The base contains a government and contractor workforce that averages 36,000 to 40,000 personnel daily.
