BREAKING: Coal Miner Killed in West Virginia

A representative of Alpha Natural Resources has confirmed to Appalachian Magazine that a coal miner in Raleigh County has been killed.

According to a company spokesperson, the mining accident occurred at Horse Creek Eagle mine in Southern West Virginia.

The miner was 49-year-old James Ray Adkins of Colcord, WV, in Raleigh County.

Gov. Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice issued the following statement today upon learning of the death of the coal miner, stating, “Cathy and I are deeply saddened and our hearts are broken after learning of the death of one of our miners. I ask all West Virginians to join us in praying for the Adkins family, their friends and all of our dedicated miners in West Virginia.”
