Saturday wasn’t a great day to be a Mountaineer, wherever you may be – especially if you were on the social media team of the Patrick Morrisey for Senate campaign.
According to a video quickly posted by fellow Republican Congressman Evan Jenkins, who is also seeking the GOP nomination, Morrisey began the day by posting a Facebook status stating, “Let’s beat Texas today Appalachian State Mountaineers!”
To be fair, Facebook tagging can be a difficult art to master, but Jenkins wasted no time in jumping on the faux pas.
“New Jersey native Patrick Morrisey is trying real hard to convince us that he has West Virginia on his mind. But—if Pat wants to represent OUR state—a good first step would be getting our football teams straight. The second would be pledging to prioritize the Mountain State’s well-being and returning his campaign contributions from Big Pharma. Don’t we deserve a U.S. Senator who understand West Virginia? #WeNeedAMountaineer”
Despite stating, “We Need a Mountaineer”, Jenkins holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Florida and a Juris Doctor from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. He previously taught business law at Marshall University.
Morrisey’s campaign released the following statement to Appalachian Magazine:
“Liberal Evan Jenkins can have fun with an accidental error and mistaken link click from a low level staffer, but Jenkins can’t deny his twenty year liberal record as Democrat and his support for higher taxes, cap and trade which kills coal jobs, and taxpayer funding of abortion.
“West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is the only candidate in this race with a proven record of advancing conservative results for West Virginia. Down in the polls, Jenkins is running a desperate campaign to try to overcome his very liberal past. It won’t work.”
