Shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018, East Tennessee was shaken by a magnitude-2.7 earthquake.
The epicenter of the quake was near the community of Sweetwater, Tennessee, which is just southwest of Knoxville.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon and are often only slightly felt by people but rarely do any damage to buildings or other structures.
Located in a valley amidst the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Sweetwater is surrounded by farmland and may best be remembered in recent years for being a prime viewing location for the 2017 solar eclipse.
